Coasteering, Canyoning and Rappel

Coasteering, Canyoning and Rappel

Coasteering

Coasteering (from the word "coast") is an adventure activity that encompasses movement along the intertidal zone of a rocky coastline on foot or by swimming, without the aid of boats, surf boards or other craft. For extra fun you do cliff jumping.

Santa Maria Island has great spots for the coasteering experience, with its turquoise-blue ocean reaching temperatures as high as 25ºC (80F) in the summer, showing you its secret beautiful caves with fossiles.

Coasteering must be done safely with specific high-quality gear and with an experienced guide.

Canyoning

Canyoning is traveling in canyons using a variety of techniques that may include other outdoor activities such as walking, scrambling, climbing, jumping, abseiling (rappelling), and swimming, providing an unique way of experiencing Nature.

One may think it's an extreme sport or at least a very demanding one. It's rather easy for the average person, however you should ensure you do it safely with high quality gear and guided by an experient guide with appropriate training to fully enjoy the experience with no concerns whatsoever.

Our company provides you with every necessary equipment and also provides the necessary briefing on the activity to take place, including practicing rappel under a safe and controlled environment - our very own facilities.

Half Day

Ribeira Funda

The Ribeira Funda canyon is set on the North part of the island, ending right by Tagarete's bay. This canyon is quite closed, with talland tight walls, which makes it quite an unique experience. Summing up to 3 easy rappel descents, the highest with 20 meters, makes it the perfect first-time canyoning experience with great fun!

Duration of the trip: about 5 hours

Price from: 60€/pax

Rappel

In Portuguese, we call it "Calçada do Gigante", which translates to "Giant's Causeway",  just like that very well-known site in Northern Island. It's one of the geosites of Santa Maria and also, where our rappel activity takes place. It's about 20 meters high, perfect to try out rappel for the first time. While descending, Ribeira do Maloás (little river stream) goes down beside us on a waterfall in its way to meet the ocean in the green parish of Santo Espírito

Duration of the trip: about 4 hours

Price from: 35€/pax
